PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal composition made proof against denaturation by e.g. the decomposition or crosslinking of the constituent anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal compound and therefore made proof against a change in color and in display characteristics by mixing an anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal compound with an ultraviolet absorber having a specified light absorption region. SOLUTION: This composition comprises an anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal compound of the formula, an ultraviolet absorber having a light absorption region of 184-370 nm, and, optionally, an antioxidant. In the formula, R1 is a 1-20C (un)saturated alkyl; R2 is a 1-20C linear or branched group selected from an alkyl, an aralkyl, and an alkoxyl; R3 is 1C or 2C halogen-substituted or unsubstituted alkyl; X is a group selected from COO, OCO, O, and a single bond; Y is a group selected from COO and OCO; and (A) and (B) are groups independently selected from unsubstituted and halogen-substituted aryls. Alignment control layers are formed in contact with the respective inner surfaces of upper and lower electrode bases, and the liquid crystal composition is sealed between the alignment control layers to obtain an anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal element.
