[Class 28 (ii).] The last-slice holder of a slicing machine is provided with a set of hooks which project for a substantial distance into the meat to render the holder suitable for holding large pieces of meat. The large hooks are automatically withdrawn from the meat as the holder approaches the slicing plane. In Figs. 2 and 3 the usual short prongs 12 are carried on shafts 14 which are operated by a hand-lever 13, connecting links 16 and gearing 17. The handle 13 is locked in the depressed position with the prongs fully projected, by a spring latch 18a which is displaceable laterally to free the handle for retraction of the prongs. The additional prongs 19 are carried on shafts 21 operated by a handle 22 pivoted in alignment with the top shaft 14 and connected by linkage 24 and gearing 25 to the prong shafts 21. The holder frame 2 has lateral extensions 3 shaped to engage the usual clamp posts, and a retaining latch 9 secures the holder in position. In operation the meat is first impaled by the short prongs 12 as usual and the long prongs 19 are then projected into the meat. As the holder approaches the slicing plane, an arm 26 on the lower shaft 21 engages a stop on the reciprocating carriage, the arm 26 being thus swung counterclockwise to withdraw the prongs 19 from the meat. In a modification, Fig. 6, the short prongs 12 are mounted in three opposed sets and are operated by a handle 13, linkage 16 and gearing 17. The long prongs 19 are carried by a plate 31 pivoted at 32 to the holder frame. The prongs are concentric with the hinge 32, and the plate 31 has an extension which engages a stop on the reciprocating carriage to effect the automatic withdrawal of the prongs. The plate 31 may be hinged about a vertical axis. The short and long prongs may be interconnected to be moved into their operative positions simultaneously. |
