Crystalline boehmitic aluminum oxide has a crystal size determined at the 020-reflex larger than the crystal size determined at the 120-reflex reduced by 1.5 nm. An independent claim is also included for the production of the aluminum oxide comprising subjecting aluminum-oxygen compounds to hydrothermal long term aging in the presence of water at 60-240 [deg]C, preferably 70-160 [deg]C for at least 10 hours, preferably 24-70 hours.
