The invention relates to a central shifting shaft (1) for a gearbox, especially an automatic gearbox, which is configured for selecting gear steps to be shifted and for shifting said gear steps. To this end, the shifting shaft is axially movable and can rotate, and has at least one engaging component (2) by which means the shifting shaft can be subjected to a force in the axial direction and in the direction of rotation in order to select and shift a gear step. The shifting shaft has a tubular shaft body (3) to which at least one engaging part can be fixed.
