PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal medium having an increased specific resistivity and a low threshold voltage, which medium contains specified organic compounds. SOLUTION: This medium contains at least one compound represented by formula I (wherein R is H or a 1-15C alkyl or alkoxyl; and Y is F, OCF3, or OCHF2) or contains at least one compound represented by formula II (wherein R' is defined in relation to R irrespectively of a group selected in formula I; L is H or F; Y is, particularly desirably, F; R and R' are each desirably linear and has 2-7 carbon atoms and is therefore exemplified by ethyl. The compounds represented by formulae I and II are colorless in their pure states and form liquid crystal mesophases in temperature ranges advantageous for electro-optical uses. Further, these compounds are stable chemically, thermally and against light. |
