PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an agent for improving shelf life of foods, synergistically having antimicrobial effect and excellent in safety by including a component selected from a diglycerol fatty acid monoester, an organic acid (salt), an amino acid and an alcohol. SOLUTION: This agent for improving shelf life of foods comprise one or more kinds of components selected from the group consisting of (A) a diglycerol fatty acid monoester which is a monoester of diglycerol with an 8-25C fatty acid, (B) an organic acid (salt) such as acetic acid, (C) an amino acid such as glycine and (D) an alcohol such as ethanol. Furthermore, it is preferable that the agent for improving shelf life of foods comprises preferably 0.0001-1 pt.wt. component A, 0.01-2 pts.wt. acetic acid, 0.01-5 pts.wt. sodium acetate and 0.01-5 pts.wt. glycine and/or 0.1-10 pts.wt. ethanol.
