PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing anα-sulfofatty acid alkyl ester salt, capable of shortening a reaction time in producing an ce-sulfofatty acid alkyl ester salt from a fatty acid alkyl ester as short as possible and suppressing discoloration. SOLUTION: In this method for producing anα-sulfofatty acid alkyl ester salt including a sulfonation process for bringing a fatty acid alkyl ester into contact with a sulfonating gas, the reaction temperature of the process for bringing the fatty acid alkyl ester into contact with the sulfonating gas is controlled to 110-150 deg.C. Preferably the iodine value of the fatty acid alkyl ester is <=0.3.
