PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a worked wood by which the worked wood having sufficient flame-retardant properties is obtained through a simple process. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a modified wood comprises the steps of substantially removing moisture and air contained in a wood, then impregnating the wood with a silicate compound solution containing alkaline silicate, collidal silica and the like and later dissolving an acid anhydride gas (carbon dioxide and the like) into the silicate compound solution contained in the wood to gel the silicate compound in the wood. Further, the wood after gelling is impregnated with a substrate treating agent containing at least either of a silane coupling agent or a reactive resin compound and the gel of the silicate compound and the wood are chemically bonded with the help of the substrate treating agent as preferable procedures.
