PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal composition having a high voltage retentivi ty in a high-temperature region, a low threshold voltage, and improved anisotropy of refractive index by mixing a -CF2O- bond-containing compound with a compound different in the number and positions of F substituents. SOLUTION: This composition comprises 5-95 wt.% at least one -CF2O- bond- containing compound selected from compounds of formulae I and II and 5-95 wt.% compound different in the number and positions of F substituents, selected from compounds of formulae III to VII. In the formulae, R1 to R7 are each a 1-10C alkyl, an alkoxyl, a 2-10C alkenyl, or an alkoxymethyl; A1 to A6 are each a single bond, -C2H4-, or -COO-; X1 to X6 are each H or F; B1 and B2 are each a single bond, cyclohexylene, trans-1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, or 1,4-phenylene or cyclohexylene at least one H atom of which may be replaced by F; Y1 and Y2 are each F, CF3, OCF3, CF2H, or Cl; and n is 0 or 1.
