PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator car position detecting device capable of easily maintaining the car-position detecting function, and rescuing passengers in a car without difficulty in an emergency. SOLUTION: A body 15 of rotation is installed in a machine room, and a wire rope 16 connected to a car is wound around the body of rotation. Further, a groove between child-ropes forming the wire rope 16 is formed into a helical shape of the same shape as the groove, and a detecting element 19 made of permanent magnetic material is elastically deformed and fitted into the groove between the child-ropes. A pick-up 21 facing the wire rope 16 is then provided on a fixed body 22 which corresponds to the body 15 of rotation. Then, an operating device 23 which is operated by output of the pick-up 21 at the time when it faces the detecting element 19, is provided. Thus, the car is elevated and lowered through a manual releasing means in an emergency, and the car is stopped through the operation of the operating device 23, caused by output of the pick-up 21.
