A composition of matter comprising(a) gypsum (CaSO4 . 2H2O);(b) one or more naturally occurring or synthetic latex polymers; and(c) one or more nonionic surfactants; wherein said composition of matter has a density less than 0.64 g/cm3 and wherein wallboard produced from said composition of matter satisfies the criteria of ASTM Methods C-36 and C-473 is provided.
