PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a detergent composition which exhibits a homogeneous cleaning effect in cleaning dishes having hard surfaces and is excellent in storage stability and biodegradability by using an alkali agent and a sequestering agent as essential ingredients. SOLUTION: An alkali agent selected from among alkali metal hydroxides, water-soluble silicates, and water-soluble carbonates and a sequestering agent selected from among polyaspartic acid compounds represented by formula I, iminodisuccinic acid compounds represented by formula II, and iminodiacetic acid compounds represented by formula III are used. In the formulas, M is H, Na, K, or NH4; and n and m are each a positive number. Preferably, the composition contains 1-65 wt.% alkali agent and 0.1-60 wt.% sequestering agent. If necessary, the composition further contains at least one additive selected from among a water-soluble polymer, a surfactant, and a detergent builder selected from among aminoacetates (except ethylenediaminetetraacetates), gluconates, phosphates, and sulfates.
