PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a water-soluble dicarboxylic acid- based copolymer, in which amounts of residual monomer and residual polymerization initiator are reduced, containing an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, and suitable as raw materials for detergents and water treating agents as constitutional monomers. SOLUTION: This method for producing a water-soluble dicarboxylic acid- based copolymer comprises adding a polymerization initiator in an amount of 10-90% based on total weight used for polymerization reaction to a heated polymerization medium or a polymerization medium to which total amount or a part of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (salt) to be polymerized is added, then adding a monomer mixture containing an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid (salt) and residual amount of the unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (salt) thereto and carrying out polymerization.
