PURPOSE: A defrost control method and apparatus is provided to detect the change of outdoor environment in an accurate manner, and prevent erroneous operation of device. CONSTITUTION: A defrost control method comprises a first step(S201 to S206) of permitting the micro computer of an outdoor unit to detect the outdoor pipeline temperature in the state where an air conditioner is in operation, and performing a defrost operation for the surface of an outdoor heat exchanger by turning off a compressor, outdoor fan and a four-way valve when the outdoor pipeline temperature is maintained for a predetermined time period at the level lower than a predetermined temperature, and by turning on the compressor and outdoor fan when another predetermined time period has lapsed; and a second step(S207 to S211) of permitting the micro computer of an indoor unit to detect the indoor pipeline temperature in the state where the defrost operation is being performed, turning off the indoor fan when the indoor pipeline temperature is lower than a predetermined temperature, permitting the micro computer to detect again the indoor pipeline temperature, and turning on the indoor fan if the indoor pipeline temperature is higher than the predetermined temperature.
