PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the misjudgement of abnormal phenomenon such as misfire caused by the lowering of the remaining amount of fuel (suction of air by fuel pump) as the abnormality of a system. SOLUTION: The existence of the abnormality in an ignition system is determined on the basis of whether the number of times of detection of misfire cmf during a predetermined period, is above an abnormality determining value or not. On this occasion, when the fuel remaining amount in a fuel tank is small, the abnormality determining value against the number of time of detection of misfire cmf is switched to an abnormality determining value refmf 3 for the lowering of the fuel remaining mount, higher than an ordinary abnormality determining value refmf 2, by determining that the possibility of the misfire caused by the suction of air by a fuel pump is high. Whereby the number of times of detection of misfire cmf is not over the abnormality determining value refmf 3 for the lowering of the fuel remaining amount even when the possibility of the misfire caused by the lowering of the fuel remaining amount (suction of air by fuel pump) is increased, and the misdetermination of the misfire caused by the lowering of the fuel remaining amount, as the abnormality of the ignition system can be prevented.
