<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To utilize chaff as a compost stock through affording itself with water absorbency in view of the fact that chaff has been limited in use because of its water repellency, has a strong industrial waste aspect in the rice crop district, therefore having been the source of trouble. SOLUTION: The subject method for utilizing chaff comprises the following practice: chaff put into a vessel is poured and soaked with an aqueous solution of a surfactant selected from those free from harmful effect on plants/animals, aquatic organisms and the environment; as a result, a deflection is developed in the cuticular layer of the chaff owing to the intermolecular force between the respective molecules of the chaff and surfactant, thereby affording the chaff with water absorbency, and the chaff becomes erodible and runs to a compost stock; the above surfactant impregnated with the chaff is absorbed into the chaff, advancing composting the chaff and having soil modification effect in composting as well; the above chaff thus afforded with water absorbency is accumulated at a compost accumulation site, being composted in about 3 months despite variance depending on ambient temperatures.</p> |
