PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as a yellow dye for a high-performance polarizing film, especially for a high-performance polarizing film for a liquid crystal projector, having excellent dyeability in the production of a polarizing film, excellent polarized light performances, capable of exhibiting excellent durability and light resistance under high-temperature/high-humidity conditions. SOLUTION: This disazo compound is shown by formula I A is a phenyl containing a water-soluble group selected from sulfo and carboxyl or the like; [B] is phenylene; D is phenyl or the like; R1 to R4 are each H, a lower alkyl or the like; n is 0 or 1} such as a disazo compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by reacting an aromatic amine compound of formula III with phenyl chlorocarbonate in an aqueous solvent to give a carbamate compound of formula IV and reacting the carbamate compound with a disazo intermediate of formula V in an aqueous solvent at 20-60 deg.C. Consequently, a dye capable of covering a relatively short-wavelength region can be produced when a polarizing film is produced by adsorbing plural dichroic dyes on a polymer film and orientating the film.
