PURPOSE: A method for protecting recorded media and a data pickup is provided to count pausing time when a temporary pause command of a recording operation is inputted, and to drive a capstan motor when the counted pausing time exceeds a preset time, to vary a contact point between the recorded media and the data pickup so as to minimize damage on the recorded media and the data pickup. CONSTITUTION: If a recording command is inputted through a user interface(200), a system controller performs a signal processing for a subject to be pictured through a camera processor according to a serial recording algorithm, and records a video signal in a tape(210). If a pause or a still command is inputted while the video signal is recorded, the system controller converts into a pause mode(240). The system controller initiates a timer counting(250), and checks whether counted values exceed a regular value(260). If the counted values are over the regular value, the system controller moves a capstan(270). The system controller suspends a capstan movement(280). The system controller checks whether a pause mode canceling command is inputted(290). If so, the system controller locates the capstan in a previous state before the pause mode conversion, and performs serial recording operations(300).
