PURPOSE: A method for converting screen attributes is provided to decide whether a program is converted, to detect category information relating to the program when the program is converted, and to control a screen attribute of the converted program according to category information, thereby using the category information to automatically control the screen attribute of the program. CONSTITUTION: A screen attribute converter decides whether a channel is changed by a user or a new program is started(S1). If so, the new program is retrieved by time information and channel information and is extracted(S2,S3). Category information relating to the program is detected from receiving data(S4). The screen attribute converter retrieves whether the detected category information is defined in a category converting table(S5). If so, a screen attribute relating to the program is controlled with a defined value to output the program(S6-S8). If the category information does not exist in the category converting table, the screen attribute is selected with a preset basic value to display the program on a screen(S7,S8).
