PURPOSE: A surface light source device is provided which has thin structure and provides a low power consumption and a characteristic of a uniform brightness and chromaticity. CONSTITUTION: A surface light source device includes a base member(31), a tube(101) and a plurality of light emitting lamps(100). The tube(101) is made of a transparent dielectric and has a sealed discharge space. The light emitting lamp(100) has a first and second electrode members(102,103) for generating a dielectric barrier discharge. The first and second electrode members(102,103) are made of a conductive metal. A reflector is mounted between the light emitting lamp(100) and diffuses the light emitted from the light emitting lamp(100). A reflective film is mounted on an upper surface of the base member(31) and reflects forwards the light emitted from the light emitting lamp(100). A fluorescent screen(34) is mounted on an upper or lower surface of a transparent plate(33) and is excited by an ultraviolet light emitted from the light emitting lamp(100). A uniform light emitting brightness is acquired at the entire area by an excited fluorescent substance of the fluorescent screen(34).
