PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method are provided to automatically select an antenna having a signal of the maximum strength or an antenna directed toward a signal of the best state by having a directional broad band antenna. CONSTITUTION: A log-periodic antenna or a Yagi antenna is used to receive a ground wave for TV. 4 to 8 number of antennas are arranged uniformly in each direction. The antennas are arranged so that distance between the antennas is set at 1/4 wavelength or the longest antenna beams of the antennas meet one another. When a user inputs a TV channel, a controller in a receiver detects an automatic gain control level which is inputted from a demodulator(2) to a tuner(1) to select an antenna having a signal of the maximum strength. In the case of DTV, the automatic gain control level applied to the tuner(1) or an MSE value in the demodulator(2) is read out to select an antenna which is directed toward a signal of the best state.
