PURPOSE: A tension adjuster for the handrail of a passenger transportation system is provided to minimize a driving resistance during the drive of the handrail. CONSTITUTION: A tension adjuster for the handrail comprises a connecting member, a tension adjusting member(70), a rotating member(80) and a handrail contact arrester. The connecting member is combined to an entire frame, leaving a certain interval with a handrail frame. The tension adjusting member is movably combined to the connecting member by an adjusting bolt(21) and a tension adjusting groove having a certain width and length. The rotating member adjusts the tension of the handrail by the movement of the tension adjusting member by being supported on the side of the handrail. The handrail contact arrester guides the handrail not to contact the rotating member and the handrail. In case of the tension or the constriction of the handrail, the tension adjusting member is vertically moved to vertically move the rotating member to adjust the tension of the handrail.
