PURPOSE: A transmissive/reflective LCD(liquid crystal display) is provided to improve color purity and to drive an LCD in a reflecting mode as well as a transmissive mode selectively. CONSTITUTION: In a reflecting mode of an LCD, the maximum pixel voltage is fed to a transparent pixel electrode(3) and linear polarized light parallel to a polarization axis passes through a linear polarizer(8). The linear polarized light becomes round through a phase difference panel(7) and passes through a liquid crystal layer(4) as it is. The light is projected into a colesteric liquid crystal color filter(5) to display a back image. In a transmissive mode, the light is projected to a round polarizer(1) to filter the other elements except the corresponding one. The round polarized light passes through the color filter(5) and liquid crystal layer(4) as it is. The light becomes linear polarized one to display a white image. A resin color filter(9) prevents color shift caused by the colesteric liquid crystal color filter(5).
