A high speed optical measurement apparatus (10) and method for measuring the surface geometry of an object. The optical measurement apparatus includes a stationary light source (12) for focusing a light signal through an extended sensing zone (34), a fixture for rotating an object of interest through the sensing zone, a detector (44) for monitoring a reflected light signal from a surface of the object and a programmable controller (45) for analyzing data received from the detector (44). The detector (44) generates data in response to the reflected light and transfers the data to the programmable controller (45).
