The invention concerns a method and a device (1) for accumulating mechanical energy comprising at least two identical cylindrical housings (2) mobile in rotation about a first spindle (3), each housing containing a coil spring (29) whereof the centre (30) is fixed to the first spindle and the outer end (33) is attached to the corresponding housing. Said housings are provided on their outer cylindrical surface with a toothed ring (4) co-operating with a toothed wheel (5) located opposite successively mobile, then integral in rotation relative to a second spindle (6), called motor spindle, each wheel comprising therefor clutch means (7) to set the wheel in a first disengaged position from the spindle motor (6), and a second clutched position integral with the motor spindle.
