摘要 A system for improving the storage capacity and data throughput of a digital storage device (210). The novel optimizations can be applied to a disk drive. The invention provides at least two disk drive heads (240, 250) for reading and writing information from two different spinning media surfaces (220, 230). If the disk is read only device, then the heads only perform the read function. A constant angular velocity drive mechanism is used. During a media transfer, the first head (240) accesses data by starting at the outside regions (202A) of the disk media and traversing inward towards the inner regions (204A). The second head (250), moves the opposite direction but in synchronization with the first head (240). A data file is portioned and its portions are accessed usin g both heads (240, 250) combined to provide a uniform and high data thoughput. The sectors are mapped and the data is interleaved to provide a maximum thoughput. Capacity is increased because much of the inner regions of the disk are used while still maintaining a high and uniform data throughput.
