An intermediate magnetic pole piece (41) is disposed on a surface facing to a medium between an upper sub-magnetic pole (40) and an upper magnetic layer (33). Since the magnitudes (L2, L1, L3) along the width of the recording track are increased gradually from the upper sub-magnetic pole (40) toward the upper magnetic pole layer (33), the extra magnetic field generated at the edges of the intermediate magnetic pole piece (41) extending along the track width and at the edges of the upper magnetic pole layer (33) is suppressed and a narrow recording track is realized reliably. Further, since the intermediate magnetic pole piece (41) is thick, the upper magnetic pole layer (33) can be formed on a single flat face by sputtering. The magnetic material of the upper magnetic pole layer can be selected from among a wide range of magnetic materials.
