The invention relates to a method for controlling transport units in a traffic network comprising road elements that are connected to one another and that can be occupied by a maximum amount of transport units that is predetermined for each road element, whereby said predetermined amount is variable during the implementation of the method and time is subdivided into discrete time intervals, whereby each transport unit begins its route during any time interval, each road element has a minimum toll that must be paid by a transport unit for the time interval during which it occupies the road element, each transport unit being assigned a budget of toll units and the transport units can buy the utilization of a road with the aid of an auction mechanism. Said measures optimize traffic flow, whereby the use of a time table becomes superfluous. The method can be used with different configurations in road traffic to reduce traffic jams and to increase road tolls based on market criteria.
