The air bag unit has an air bag and at least one gas generator for inflating the air bag. The gas generator can deliver more gas after the air bag has been fully inflated. The supply of further gas is controlled so that the internal pressure of the air bag is maintained in a pressure range specified for the protection of an occupant for a defined period. An Independent claim is also included for a method of introducing air into an air bag of an air bag unit.
