In order to record fingerprint data using a sensor (16) which is comprised of a linear row of sensor elements, the data generated by the sensor (16) is compressed using run length coding by means of a data compression switching circuit (22). The compressed data is subsequently encoded and transmitted by a serial interface (28, 14, 30) to a data processing unit (12). The fingerprint data received, compressed and encoded there is decoded in a program-controlled manner and is converted into decompressed fingerprint data.
