The friction clutch for a motor vehicle has a diaphragm spring (4) between the clutch casing (2) and the pressure plate to align them. A compensator (7) between the casing and spring has a pivot bearing (6) supported axially on the casing for axial movement under the action of the compensator. The spring has peripheral tongues to bias it towards the bearing.
