Process for separating melamine from hot melamine-containing gas mixtures in which the gas mixture is cooled in a cooling zone through direct contact with an evaporating medium, this evaporating medium being sprayed so that the specific area is greater than 600 m<2>/m<3> of liquid and in which in at least a part of the cooling zone, the gas has an impulse (= rhogas*(vgas)<2>) of more than 0.2 kg/(m.s<2>) and that the residence time of the gas in the cooling zone, in which the gas is cooled to a temperature below 210 DEG C, is less than 11 sec.
