The method involves dividing a message to be sent into a number of "fragments" whose length is smaller than the base unit of data used by the network over which the data is to be sent, i.e. if the network operates on 8-bit words, the fragments could be 1-7 bits in length. The fragments are then allocated to a number of separate streams, e.g. cyclically or alternately, to form a number of "partial messages" which are then sent separately over the network to the recipient, where they are recombined. The network used may typically be the Internet, but other networks could also be used. Messages may be sent to separate addresses at the receiver. The messages can be sent over the same communications link or different links in the same network (e.g. Figs.1,3), or via different networks (e.g. Fig.6). Using this method, any unauthorised recipient intercepting a message will usually only receive a part of the message, but in the case where a whole message is intercepted, the message will be scrambled and therefore unintelligible without knowledge of how to recombine the partial messages.
