The sliding wedge breech block (5), for a large caliber weapon, is secured in the closed position by at least two sprung locking bolts (18,19) at right angles to the longitudinal axis (7) of the breech block (5). The bolts (18,19) engage openings (22) in the breech block to give a force fit locking action of the breech block in the breech (3). The locking and unlocking action on the locking bolts (18,19) is through the pawl at the breech opening lever, which acts on a control rod (8) to move the driving rod (14) for the bolts (18,19). The electrical firing cable for the firing pin (17) is through the control rod (8).
