[Class 45] [Also in Group XV] A strapping-machine comprises a frame 11, 12, 15 in which is mounted a pair of serrated wheels 19 having between them a ratchet wheel 22 adapted to be engaged by a pawl 23 on a lever 21. The wheels are positioned relatively to the bale tie by an eccentric gear operated by a lever 25 movable between stops 28, 29. In use, the overlapping ends 17, 18, Fig. 6, of the tie, encircled by a sleeve or seal 38, are placed in a slot 16 in the frame with the seal registering with the sealing apparatus 30, and the wheels 19 are lowered into contact with the end 18 by means of the lever 25. Immediately below the wheels a hardened serrated block 26 projects slightly above the level of the base 11 to engage the end 17 while tension is applied by rocking the lever 21. The parts 17, 18, 38 are then sealed. The sealing block 30 is mounted in the frame for vertical movement by means of a lever 32 on a shaft 31 having an eccentric portion 33 embraced by a sheave 34 coupled to the upper end of the block by a knuckle joint in the groove 35. The lower end of the block carries a replaceable die 36 with six teeth 37 to form the indentations in the seal, the end teeth being bevelled to form tapered indentations deepest at the edges and receding towards the centre. The forward face of the block carries a cutter 39 for scoring the part 18 so that it may be broken off. The ends 40 are extended downwares to engage the strapping across its entire width. |
