Sensors are used to monitor the position of one of the web length edges (11) and this position is compared with that of the welding line (6), so that the web length edge position on the conveyor (1) can be maintained in alignment with the welding line with the aid of clamping means. A machine for cutting and welding a web of rubber material (8) comprises a conveyor for supplying the web, a unit (2) for cutting the web at an angle into strips (3-3''), a unit (5) for welding adjacent strips together along their length edges (12'-13''), a feed conveyor (4) for supplying strips oriented in the machine direction to the welding unit, and a discharge conveyor (7) for removing the welded together strips. A support construction is provided for a roll of rubber material. Sensors are used to monitor the position of one of the web length edges. A means is provided for comparing the position of the welding line with the web length edge, and sending a control signal used to change the web length edge position on the conveyor so that the welding line is an extension of this length edge. The main conveyor and feed conveyor are provided with means for clamping the web length edge in place.
