A sliver can conveyor, especially between successive drawframes, has a longitudinal conveying section followed by a transverse conveying section at right angles to it. A driving element transfers the cans between the sections. The sections have driving elements (26a,26b,24a,24b,17a,17b,20a,20b) which engage the cans and each section has a transfer device (28,29,30,31) with a driving element. Preferably the transfer device (28,29,30,31) is preferably a short endless belt or chain with a driving peg (32,33,34,35) which engages the cans from below and moves downwards out of the way near the end (28b,29b,30b,31b) of its travel. The turning rollers at one end of the belt (28,29,30,31) are concentric with the turning rollers for the conveyor belts (26a,26b,24a,24b,17a,17b,20a,20b). A controllable barrier holds up the leading can on the supplying conveyor and the conveyor belts slide under the cans till the transfer device moves the leading can on to the next conveyor. All the drives are controlled from a central controller.
