A fuel of vegetable origin is produced by the hydrogenation of waste material such as wood, straw and other vegetables. The suppression of atmospheric pollution comprises the hydrogenation of residues comprising paper, fermentation products from vegetable waste such as straw, products from brushwood clearings and other forestry or agricultural activities. The finely milled residues are hydrogenated at sufficient temperatures and pressures, optionally in the presence of a catalyst, to produce liquids analogous to petroleum products or gases. The greenhouse effect, due to increasing amounts of carbon monoxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is diminished.
