New constitutive plant promoter active specifically in roots, useful for controlling expression of pest or drought resistance genes, and related transgenic plants

A nucleic acid (I) comprising: (1) all or part of a plant promoter (II) that directs expression of a selected sequence in root cells at all stages of development of the plant; or (2) a sequence at least 80% identical to a 2149 base pair sequence (S1) fully defined in the specification or its complement, but excluding sequence AC 007289 (S2) of the EMBL database, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a probe or primer (Ia) containing 10-2000 consecutive nucleotides (nt) from (I); (b) a cloning and/or expression vector comprising (I) or (Ia); (c) recombinant host cells comprising (I), (Ia) or the vector of (b); (d) a multicellular plant containing a cell of (c); (e) a transgenic plant containing (I) or (Ia) integrated into its genome; (f) producing the transgenic plants; and (g) plant seeds in which the cells contain (I) or (Ia) in the genome or are obtained from the transgenic plants.
