The device has a rotor(12) with rotor arms(16) installed in drum fashion around its rotational axis(14). The rotor arms project on one side from a carrier element(18) driven in a rotational direction, and are separated from each other by open recesses on the side facing away from the carrier element. A suction unit(30) has a carrier arm(36) parallel to the rotational axis of the rotor and on its free end is equipped with an extension arm(26) at right angles to the rotational axis and supporting a suction head(28) which periodically communicates with a vacuum source(38). At the other end the suction unit has a drive(34) synchronised with the rotor.
