METHOD FOR CONTROLLING MALE FERTILITY BY THE USE OF EXTERNALLY INDUCED PROMOTER SEQUENCE

The invention relates to a method in which an inducing promoter is used for the regulation of the expression of a gene for which it is known that is critical for male fertility. The selected gene sequence are modified in such a way that normally the gene is "excluded" and as a result the plants are male and sterile. When reproduction of male sterile plants is intended, male fertility is resumed by treating the plants with a chemical which is not phytotoxic and induces the expression of the critical gene. The critical gene affects the production of flavonol, especially of compounds with formula where R1, R2, R4, R5, R7, R8 are hydrogen, hydroxyl or alkohygroups, having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The preferred flavonols are galangin, kempferol, isoramnetine, quertzetine and morine. 15 claims, 6 figures
