A polymerizable dental compositions contains di- or more highly functional and optionally monofunctional ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s), a redox initiator system for free radical polymerization, plasticizer and optionally various additives. The redox initiator system comprises: (i) a barbituric acid derivative and/or a malonylsulfamide and (ii) an organic peroxide selected from mono- or poly-functional carboxylic peroxy esters. In polymerizable dental compositions containing: (a) 10-98.999 wt.% di- or more highly functional ethylenically unsaturated monomers, (b) 0-88.999 wt.% monofunctional ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s), (c) 0-5 wt.% accelerator, (d) 0.001-5 wt.% redox initiator system for free radical polymerization, (e) 0-88.999 wt.% filler, thixotropic additive, inhibitor and other ancillaries and (f) 1-30 wt.% usual plasticizer, the redox initiator system comprises: (i) a barbituric acid derivative and/or a malonylsulfamide and (ii) an organic peroxide selected from mono- or poly-functional carboxylic peroxy esters.
