Production of long, fine filaments from polymer melt comprises passing the melt through a spinneret and exposing the fibres produced to a high speed gas stream as they pass through a hole (6) in a plate (6') below the extrusion head (11). The geometry of the spinneret, speed at which the melt flows through it, distance fro the plate, temperature of the melt and speed of the gas stream are adjusted so that the pressure within the fibres before they harden is higher than the gas pressure around them and they split into fine filaments. Independent claims is included for: (a) apparatus for producing the filaments comprising an extrusion had and a plate as described above; (b) a fleece produced from the filaments; and (c) thread produced from the filaments.
