When stamping the plates a relative movement takes place between the first body (3) having the stamping tool and the second body (4) having the receiving device for the plates. When reaching mass balance when setting the stamping tool relative to the plates both the first and second body execute a movement on the machine bed (2) where the accelerations of the two bodies are at least approximately inversely proportional to the relevant masses of the first and second body. Independent claim describes apparatus where first and second body are provided with common or separate drive unit. The bodies can be driven by a rotary threaded spindle (11) with two sections (19, 20) with opposite pitches with one section driving the first body and the other section driving the second.
