The invention permits the hardware-address-oriented transmission of data from an origin network device (R1) to a destination network device (A2). The origin network device (R1) assigns a fictitious hardware address (FIMAC2) to the data to be transmitted, which address is used to identify a transmission destination even though it does not correspond to the actual hardware address (MAC2) specified by the manufacturer. The fictitious hardware address (FIMAC2) is transmitted to an address conversion device (A1) provided for in the invention, in which an address information (ATM2) identifying the destination network device (A2) is assigned to said fictitious hardware address (FIMAC2). The address information (ATM2) assigned to the fictitious hardware address (FIMAC2) is then assigned to the data which on the basis of the address information (ATM2) are then transmitted to the destination network device (A2).
