The method involves determining the distance from the fuel quantity and a determined fuel consumption. Situation-dependent mean consumption figures are determined, a current vehicle position is determined and the residual distance is computed from the fuel quantity, the current position, a stored route and route-specific information. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for determining the distance to be travelled by a motor vehicle with a certain fuel supply.
