The invention concerns a detector (2) supplying a frequency proportional to the vehicle (4) speed. A display screen (23) displays a reference speed defined by control knobs (24, 26). Warning lights (27) and/or audio warning devices (28) deliver warning signals whereof the amplitude increases with the excess speed relative to the displayed reference speed. During a pre-calibrating step, a calibrating control (29) is actuated by the user when the vehicle speed is in a relationship selected by the user with a theoretical calibrating speed indicated by the device. Thus the apparatus can easily be adapted to all types of vehicles. The user, by choosing to actuate the control for a real speed of the vehicle different from the theoretical calibrating speed, may introduce a calibrating factor which customises the functioning of the device and particularly the speed levels triggering each type of warning. |
