The piezoelectric actuator has a multi-layer structure with alternating inner electrodes (3,4,5,6) positioned between successive piezoelectric layers (2) and contacted on the opposite sides of the multi-layer structure by opposing external electrodes (7,8). Selected inner electrodes extend across the full width of the multi-layer structure to the opposite side face, with the external electrodes spaced from the side of the multi-layer structure for bridging this layer and preventing a short-circuit. An Independent claim for application of a piezoelectric actuator for operation of a mechanical component is also included.
