An organic-inorganic composite magnetic material having superparamagnetism o r ferromagnetism which comprises a metal powder and an organic radical chemisorbed on the surface thereof is prepared by a method which comprises reducing a salt of an ion of a metal capable of chemisorptioning a thiol by a reducing agent in the presence of a stabilizing ligand and replacing the stabilizing ligand adsorbed on a soluble fine metal powder by a thiol type organic radical having an unpaired electron, to thereby synthesize a fine metal powder having an organic moiety adsorbed thereon.
