An energy absorbing device (10) comprises a central body portion (11) and at least three legs (33, 34) extending outwardly from said body portion (11). Each of the legs (33, 34) has a first and a second end, the first ends of the legs being linked together and to the body portion 11 to define support means adapted to support a length of an elongate safety line. The second end of each of the legs (33, 34) is attached to a foot member (41). Each foot member (41) is capable of undergoing permanent plastic deformation in response to sudden shock loading transmitted through the elongate safety line. The permanent plastic deformation is effective to absorb at least a part of the energy of the sudden shock loading.
